Desperado was the first
Desperado was Salma Hayek’s first U.S. film. However, it was not her first appearance in the cinema. In 1994, she played the role of Donna, in Road racers by director Robert Rodriguez. In Desperado, the actress played the role of Carolina, a young bar owner who is chased by a hitman who wants to end her life. With the help of El Mariachi, played by actor Antonio Banderas, she manages to escape (at least for a while) her fate.

Salma Hayek is not exactly known for her appearance in romantic comedies, but in 1997 she decided to star in the film Fools Rush In, alongside Matthew Perry, who played the character of Alex Whitman. He’s an architect who, on a trip, meets Isabel Fuentes, played by Hayek. Both characters, with opposite personalities, face an unforeseen situation that forever changes the plans that each had for their lives. That, and their cultural differences, makes them reflect on their relationship and their future.
No one writes to the colonel, a literary film
In 1999, Salma Hayek once again had one of her greatest moments of glory as an actress, when she played the role of Lobarbo Chipika in the film No one writes to the colonel, an adaptation of the novel by Gabriel García Márquez. After presenting the film in Mexico, the cast went to show it at the Cannes Film Festival and, although the producers had intended to submit it for an Academy Award in the category of Best Original Film, this could not be done.
