Venezuelan TV host Raúl González, beloved figure from Univision’s “Despierta América”, has spoken publicly for the first time about his sexual orientation, tearfully declaring: “I am gay.”
The heartfelt revelation came during an interview with journalist Mandy Fridmann, coinciding with the launch of his new autobiographical book La verdad muere de pie (“The Truth Dies Standing”), where he opens up about deeply personal struggles and the years he spent in silence.
“There comes a moment when you say: ‘Enough of pretending to be someone you’re not. Enough of wearing a mask, of carrying the guilt of the past,’” González said, his voice breaking.
The host explained that his decision to speak openly was driven by a need for freedom and inner peace, after decades of living with shame and fear of social judgment.
“I Am Gay”: A Confession That Sets Him Free
In his book, Raúl González recounts the pain of hiding his identity for years and how that silence led him to seek refuge in food, alcohol, and toxic relationships.“I was someone who hid, who tried to fill the void with other things to appear strong. But no more. I want to live in peace,” he confessed.

González acknowledged that he was fully aware of the public impact his confession would have: “The door has been opened. There will be comments, of course—but I’m not afraid anymore. People condemn you in the name of God, and I no longer want to live like that.”
His words reflect a deep process of acceptance and healing, after years of emotional repression and fear of rejection.
The Promise Raúl González Made to His Father
One of the most emotional moments of the interview came when Raúl González spoke about his father’s reaction upon learning the truth.
“When my dad found out, he made me promise that no one would know until after his death. And out of love and respect, I promised—because I understood his shame,” he revealed.
The host admitted that keeping that secret for so long became a painful burden, trapping him between filial loyalty and his need to be authentic.
“I sacrificed my happiness, but he died in peace,” González said tearfully.
Over time, however, his father began to accept him with love: “At first there was denial, but later there was such a beautiful kind of love… That’s the message I want to share: forgiveness and reconciliation.”
A Message of Love and Hope
Raúl González explained that he chose to share his story to inspire others who might be living in fear or shame about their identity.
“We come from a culture where it’s often said, ‘I’d rather have a daughter who’s a prostitute than a gay son.’ Those words wound deeply,” he reflected.
He revealed that he began therapy at 17 years old to understand his identity and begin to heal emotionally.
With his book, González hopes to spark open conversations about self-acceptance, empathy, and emotional resilience.
“This isn’t something you choose. If I could have avoided it, I would have. But today, I choose to live in peace with myself,” he concluded.
