Thousands of U.S. residents will be able to claim a check worth up to $10,000 thanks to an $8 million settlement.

This settlement follows a data breach that affected clients of the law firm Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe.

The agreement includes payments only for those who can prove they were harmed by the information leak.

But TAKE NOTE, there is limited time for those affected to claim this substantial check.

The case stems from a class-action lawsuit against the Silicon Valley firm, accusing it of failing to adequately protect its clients’ information.

The lawsuit alleges that Orrick, Herrington & Sutcliffe acted negligently by not implementing sufficient cybersecurity measures, as reported by The Sun.

This negligence led to unauthorized data breach, that is, access to confidential documents and files. Without admitting liability, Orrick agreed to pay $8 million to resolve the matter.

The settlement terms allow class-action members to receive compensation for time and resources spent responding to the security incident.

It includes reimbursement of up to $2,500 for ordinary expenses related to the data breach.

If victims of the incident suffered identity theft or fraud due to the hack, they may receive an additional $7,500.

This brings the total possible compensation to $10,000 for each affected client.

For those who choose not to claim detailed reimbursements, the settlement offers an alternative payment of $75.

Compensation is available to those who received notice of the data breach from Orrick between March and December 2023.

However, affected individuals have until October 28 to claim the substantial check, according to The Sun.

The final approval hearing for the settlement is scheduled for November 8, at which point all agreed terms are expected to be confirmed.

This case serves as a reminder of the importance of cybersecurity in handling personal data and the need for protection against privacy violations.
