A lucky few have been able to spend some time inside the luxury residences of these cartel leaders. Large estates, heated pools, endless gardens, exotic animals as well as gold and diamond details are some of the notable features of their incredible homes.

Many of the properties that these Mexican drug traffickers had in their possession are currently in the custody of authorities. Well, most of them still provide evidence against their owners.

In addition to a great architecture, the million-dollar mansions of the Mexican drug lords have one thing in common, they were obtained through money laundering, transporting drugs and murder. In addition to the fact that they undoubtedly functioned as a rest area or meeting place for criminal activity.

According to El universal, one of the drug houses that has attracted the most attention, due to its opulence and unusual features, is that of Teodoro García Simental ‘El Teo’, head of the Tijuana Cartel.

The mansion has details such as imported marble floors, swimming pool, gardens, palapa and more than 10 full baths. It is currently in a neglected state, since visiting it was prohibited after the capture of García Simental in 2010.

The famous ‘House of the Thousand and One Nights’ belonged to Amado Carrillo Fuentes, former leader of the Juárez Cartel, located in the city of Hermosillo, Sonora. After the death of ‘The Lord of the Skies’ during a cosmetic procedure he was having to try and change his face, the mansion ended up in the hands of the Attorney General’s Office in 1993.

This property boasts Arabian-style architecture, huge rooms with cedar wardrobes, jacuzzis surrounded by mirrors with silver details, as well as underground passageways that allowed people to leave the house in secret in the event of a possible raid.

An estate with more than 10,000 square meters of land and approximately 500 meters of construction constituted one of the luxury residences of Édgar Valdez Villarreal ‘La Barbie’. He was one of the most wanted men in Mexico and the United States for theft and money laundering.

Located in La Marquesa, the mansion is three stories tall. The property includes a casino, canteens, and stables with thoroughbred horses. This and other properties were seized by the authorities after the arrest of ‘La Barbie’ in August 2010.

Swimming pool, palapas, beach-like setting, bar and nightclub are some of the features of the luxury residences of the leader of the Santa Rosa de Lima Cartel, the ‘Huachicolero mayor’ José Yepez Ortiz, also nicknamed ‘El Marro’.

A mansion in Guanajuato, properties in Celaya and in various areas of Mexico were seized by Mexican authorities after a failed operation to capture him. However, «El Marro» is still wanted by the law on charges of extortion, kidnapping and leading the main Huachicol cartel in Mexico.

Rancho Leonero is located in Los Cabos, Baja California. It is one of the luxury properties belonging to drug trafficker Francisco Javier Arellano Félix ‘El tigrillo’. To enter this mansion it is necessary to travel more than eight kilometers.

The residence has a private beach, swimming pool, gold finishes, and green areas that functioned as a meeting or recreation space. This mansion was home to Arellano Félix during his last days of freedom, before his capture in 2006 by the DEA.

Mansions on the beach, ranches, yachts, cars and zoos were part of the luxurious heritage of Joaquin Gumán Loera ‘El Chapo’, leader of one of the most dangerous and important cartels of recent times: The Sinaloa Cartel.

After his arrest in 2018, these properties were taken by the federal government and the president of Mexico, Andres Manuel López Obrador, made the decision to put them up for sale. They auctioned off one of the mansions seized from ‘El Chapo’, located in Sinaloa. This is one of the most impressive million-dollar mansions of the Mexican capos because it had high-tech security and luxury equipment. In the same way, all the tubs in the bathrooms have access to the tunnels and basements.
