On International Migrants Day, Mexico’s President Claudia Sheinbaum announced enhanced consular efforts to support Mexicans in the United States.

This comes in light of President-elect Donald Trump’s threats of mass deportations.

Sheinbaum highlighted the importance of migration as an essential element of Mexican identity.

As well as the contributions of millions of nationals abroad, especially in the U.S., home to over 12 million Mexicans.

During her daily press conference at the National Palace, Sheinbaum unveiled the new “Himno Migrante” (Migrant Anthem), performed by the group Legado de Grandeza, celebrating the history and struggle of Mexican migrants abroad.

“Mexico is also written with an ‘M’ for migrant,” Sheinbaum emphasized.

She reaffirmed her administration’s commitment to the well-being of citizens living outside the country, as reported by EFE.

The anthem, performed by nearly 20 Mexican and Mexican-American singers, was described by Sheinbaum as a gift to Mexicans abroad.

The song honors those who, like the artists’ ancestors, emigrated to the U.S. seeking a better life.

Particularly for their families.

“Each of you is a great singer. It gives us goosebumps. Long live Mexico!” Sheinbaum declared emotionally.

She emphasized the pride and unity represented by Mexican migrants.

Strengthening Consular Networks and Legal Assistance

In tandem, De la Fuente highlighted efforts to strengthen Mexico’s consular network in the U.S. during his visit to El Paso, Texas, where he met with Mexican nationals.

This initiative responds to concerns stemming from Trump’s recent threats of mass deportations and accusations that Mexico isn’t doing enough to protect its citizens.

De la Fuente stated that President Sheinbaum has issued clear instructions to coordinate actions and provide comprehensive support to migrants, especially those facing potential deportation.

He emphasized the importance of providing legal counsel to help Mexican nationals defend their rights against deportations and other legal challenges.

One of the main measures implemented by the Mexican government is the simplification of consular procedures. This initiative has been well-received by the migrant community.

De la Fuente noted that this simplification improves access to services and reduces the bureaucratic hurdles that have historically complicated migrants’ lives.

Visits to Various U.S. Cities

While on a work tour in El Paso, #Texas, Foreign Minister Juan Ramón de la Fuente highlighted the area’s significance due to its binational community and successful cross-border cooperation.

During his tour, De la Fuente met with local authorities and migrants, gaining firsthand insight into their challenges.

Strengthening consular presence and support measures for migrants is part of an overarching strategy by the Mexican government.

This effort underscores Mexico’s commitment to defending the rights and well-being of its citizens amidst the looming threat of stricter immigration policies from Trump’s administration.

This strategy highlights Mexico’s dedication to its diaspora, a crucial pillar of the nation’s economy and culture both in the U.S. and globally.
