  • Criticism erupts on social media.
  • Iconic setting: Washington Monument in the background.

The White House unveiled the official portrait of First Lady Melania Trump on Monday, a black-and-white image captured by Belgian photographer Regine Mahaux.

Mahaux had previously photographed Melania Trump for her official portrait during Donald Trump’s first term (2017-2021).

The portrait was taken on January 21, the day after Trump’s inauguration, in the Yellow Oval Room.

This room, located on the second floor of the White House, serves as part of the presidential family’s residence.

In the portrait, Melania stands behind a table, resting her hands on it, with a large window framing the iconic Washington Monument in the background.

She wears a serious expression, dressed in a dark suit with a blazer and pants, paired with a white shirt.

This portrait contrasts with the one from Trump’s first term, which was a color image featuring the First Lady with her arms crossed and a slight smile.

The transition from a lighter expression to a more solemn tone may be interpreted as a reflection of the political and personal maturity she has gained during her time in the White House.

Criticism floods social media

However, as soon as Melania Trump’s portrait was revealed, social media users wasted no time voicing their criticisms.

Many commented that «she is not the one governing the country» and speculated that the image looked artificially generated.

«Retouched rather than photographed. Looks like bad AI,» «and that reptile, who is it?» «almost looks human,» some remarked.

Others added: «Someone should tell her she won’t be the one ruling,» «are we sure that’s Melania? Her face looks eerily similar to Trump’s—too much proximity takes a toll.»
