A little over a year ago, a frightening video of a man surrounded by at least six heavily armed people wearing camouflage clothing began to circulate on WhatsApp and social media. «My name is Carlos Enrique Sánchez Martínez, alias El Cholo, originally from Guadalajara, Jalisco,» said the former leader of the Nueva Plaza Cartel (CNP). Now, disturbing morgue photos of his body continue to spread today.

Agencia Reforma reported some time ago that this criminal group was born from a split with the Jalisco Nueva Generación Cartel (CJNG) in 2017. The popular story suggests that on March 10 of that year, El Cholo murdered a person close to Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, in Puerto Vallarta. This man is leader of the CJNG.

The cartels’ trail of terror

Since then, the CNP had the support of the Sinaloa Cartel to seize the Jalisco plaza. High-impact crimes were unleashed from there and among them, for example, were the three corpses that were left hanging on a vehicular bridge in Periferico, near Mariano Otero, on July 8, 2017, according to Agencia Reforma.

In August of that year, the Prosecutor’s Office began discovering clandestine graves inside homes, such as those in the Villa Fontana Aqua subdivision, in Tlajomulco, and the one in Colonia Santa Elena de la Cruz in Guadalajara. Then, on March 6, 2018, the authorities found the bodies of eight people in a truck in Colonia Morelos, in Guadalajara. They had been dismembered.

“Difficult days are coming”

There was a message for El Cholo with the bodies and it was signed with the acronym CJNG. It was not until then that the drug war between the CJNG and the CNP was publicly accepted. «There is a struggle between two cartels, indeed, there is a struggle between two cartels,» then-prosecutor Raúl Sánchez Jiménez had to accept the following day, according to Agencia Reforma.

“Difficult days are coming, I am not lying to you, the wave of violence is not going to end,” former Governor Aristóteles Sandoval later stated. The disappearance of the three film students on March 19, 2018 was also added to the violence which, according to authorities at that time, was perpetrated by the CJNG after mistaking one of them for a member of the CNP.

Another high-impact crimes linked to the dispute was the shooting in which a 17-year-old hitman, allegedly recruited by the CNP, murdered one of the founders of the CJNG, Martín Arzola, alias «El 53», on March 31, July 2019.

In the video that circulated on March 18, 2021, El Cholo began to describe all the things he had supposedly done in the City, to «warm up» the square. He confessed to murders, graves, the Jauja massacre and alleged support from local and federal authorities. «You guys, the few or many who are left supporting me, leave things and dedicate yourself to family. See how I ended up,» he said in the video.

El Cholo’s body was left on a bench

Hours later, as if it were the script of a horror movie, photographs of the man’s face were also released. A person grabs him by the hair and El Cholo grits his teeth. Later, at noon and in the Tlaquepaque Center, the capo’s body was left on a bench. He was wrapped in black plastic with messages stuck into his chest and thighs with knives. They read: The treacherous: Carlos Enrique Sánchez Martínez, Alias ​​»El Cholo. and Thanks to all those who sent me to warm up!

Those who left him, presumably members of the CJNG easily escaped. Despite the nearby cameras, no one has been arrested for the crime, reported Agencia Reforma in March of this year. It was thought that El Cholo’s murder might bring peace to the area.

According to figures from the Executive Secretariat, from April 2020 to February 2021 there were 2,365 murder victims in Jalisco. From April 2021 to February 2022 there were 2,023 victims.
