U.S. health authorities reported this Friday that the Escherichia coli outbreak linked to McDonald’s hamburgers has affected a total of 75 people, with a tragic death in Colorado.

This outbreak has spread to 13 states, with an increase of 26 new cases since the last report from the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC).

The latest report notes that 22 people have been hospitalized, including the deceased and two individuals facing kidney complications.

Among those affected, all confirmed eating at McDonald’s before showing symptoms, with most mentioning the popular Quarter Pounder as the product consumed.

The CDC indicated that the most recent symptom onset date was October 10.

So far, authorities have not confirmed the exact source of the contamination, although the investigation is focused on the onion slices and hamburger meat.

As a precaution, Taylor Farms, a McDonald’s onion supplier, has started recalling potentially affected products.

In response, McDonald’s has removed the Quarter Pounder from menus in several affected states.

E. coli Outbreak Raises Concern Among Fast Food Chains

Despite the severity of the outbreak, the CDC considers the public risk «very low» thanks to swift actions taken by both companies.

Symptoms of E. coli infection typically include severe stomach cramps, diarrhea, and vomiting, which usually appear three to four days after ingesting the bacteria.

The news of the outbreak has impacted the fast-food chain, causing its stock price to drop over 5% in after-hours trading following the announcement of cases linked to its food.

Health officials continue to urge consumers to be alert to symptoms and seek medical attention if they experience gastrointestinal issues after consuming McDonald’s products. The investigation is ongoing to identify the exact source of the contamination and prevent future outbreaks.
