Six people have contracted bird flu in California amid a concerning outbreak primarily affecting the state’s dairy industry, authorities reported on Friday.

This outbreak, concentrated in the Central Valley, has raised alarms among livestock workers, USA TODAY reported.

In response, health authorities have ramped up prevention and control measures to curb the spread of the virus.

On Thursday, the fourth infection was confirmed, and authorities are awaiting lab results for two other suspected cases.

All of the affected individuals work in direct contact with infected dairy cattle, reinforcing the theory that the outbreak is linked to the handling of sick livestock.

The Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) updated the situation on Friday.

The CDC noted that the six infected individuals have shown mild symptoms, such as eye redness and discharge, with none requiring hospitalization.

For example, those working in the livestock sector are at significantly higher risk of contracting bird flu.

What Is Known About the Cases?

Experts suggest there is no direct connection between the confirmed cases, indicating a broader spread of the virus among dairy herds in the region.

This poses a danger not only to those directly handling the animals but also to the stability of the agricultural sector in the area.

One of the more recent cases occurred on a farm where an infected worker had already been identified.

However, authorities clarified that the two individuals were not in close contact, as they worked in different areas of the facility.

What Did the Authorities Declare?

Additionally, California health officials stated on Friday that a seventh person in the Central Valley may have contracted the virus, with definitive lab results pending.

To date, 20 people in the United States have been diagnosed with bird flu in 2024, most of them involved in handling dairy or poultry livestock.

However, in Missouri, a case was identified with no clear transmission source, raising concerns.

The affected individual was hospitalized, and some healthcare workers who attended to them have shown mild symptoms.

CDC Offers More Information on the Bird Flu Cases

Although there is no evidence of person-to-person transmission—a crucial factor that, if confirmed, would mark a significant shift in the virus’s spread.

The CDC has sequenced the virus from three infected individuals in California, concluding that the strain is very similar to the one affecting livestock.

There is no evidence of genetic mutations that would facilitate human-to-human transmission or reduce the effectiveness of antiviral medications.

The outbreak has significantly impacted California’s dairy industry, where bird flu cases have been confirmed in 100 herds.

What Are the Protection Measures?

Nationally, around 300 herds in 14 states have reported infections, putting the industry and workers at risk.

In response, health authorities have intensified their protection recommendations, urging workers to use personal protective equipment.

This includes N95 respirators, goggles, and gloves to reduce the risk of infection, USA TODAY reported.

Additionally, efforts have been strengthened to vaccinate livestock workers against seasonal flu, although this vaccine does not directly protect against bird flu.
