Last Friday, when a gust of wind sent an inflatable castle airborne during a baseball game, a 5-year-old child died and another was injured.
The incident took place at Regency Furniture Stadium, home of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs minor league baseball team, as reported by The Associated Press.
At 9:21 p.m., a strong gust of wind lifted an inflatable castle being used by children during the game, prompting local emergency personnel to receive a call about the incident.
The inflatable rose 15 to 20 feet in the air, throwing the children onto the field before falling back to the ground, according to a press release from Charles County government.

The game continued while the incident occurred, allowing a swift response from emergency teams already present at the stadium.
Baseball team coaches, along with several volunteer rescuers, immediately attended to the injured children.

Despite their efforts, a 5-year-old from La Plata, Maryland, was airlifted to Children’s National Hospital in Washington, where he was sadly pronounced dead.
A second child was also airlifted with non-life-threatening injuries.

Courtney Knichel, general manager of the Southern Maryland Blue Crabs, expressed deep sorrow on behalf of the entire organization for the tragedy.
«Our entire organization extends our condolences to the family mourning the loss of a child and concern for the child who was injured,» Knichel said in a statement.
Reuben B. Collins II, President of the Charles County Government Commission, also expressed condolences, emphasizing the shared pain throughout the community.
«We extend our deepest empathy to the children and their families during this difficult time,» Collins stated.
