The U.S. Department of Homeland Security stated this Friday that the country’s southern border is safer than it was four years ago.

This is due to measures implemented by President Joe Biden’s administration, such as increasing the number of agents in the area.

In addition to enforcing immigration laws, expanding collaboration with other authorities, and enhancing technology to detect smuggling.

The federal agency’s secretary, Alejandro Mayorkas, revealed the 2024 data.

Mayorkas reviewed the past four years, three days before Donald Trump’s presidency begins.

He reported a «significant» general decrease in border crossings, including a reduction of more than 60% at ports of entry along the border between May and December.

«The encounters at ports of entry in November and December were at their lowest level since August 2020, and recent monthly encounter levels have been lower than the monthly average in 2019.»

This resulted from an executive order by President Biden in June 2024, which drastically restricted asylum applications at the border with Mexico, he claimed.

He also highlighted in a statement that so far this year, encounters with the Border Patrol are nearly 50% lower compared to January 2021.

Also, in 2024, the agency he leads completed more than 685,000 expulsions and voluntary returns of immigrants, more than any previous fiscal year since 2010.

This includes more deportations to countries other than Mexico than in any previous fiscal year, the statement noted.

He also claimed a 60% decrease between 2023 and 2024 in the number of people who manage to evade border agents and an 89% decrease in immigrants released while awaiting their immigration court proceedings.

What did Mayorkas say about it?

Mayorkas also highlighted when Congress did not approve the bipartisan agreement on border security, which would have allocated the necessary personnel and funds to strengthen security at the southern border.

The Biden Administration «took decisive and effective measures,» such as making classified information available for the first time to the Border Patrol for background checks.

He added the increase to 24,000 agents and officers at the southern border, the enhancement of technology to better detect narcotics and other types of smuggling.

This included imposing sanctions on companies that have facilitated the transportation of irregular migration and the dismantling of transnational criminal organizations.
