  • An extreme heat wave will hit much of the US, including areas where thousands have lost power.
  • More than 100 million people are expected to be affected by mid-week.
  • Authorities urge residents to stay indoors when possible.

Extreme heat was forecast again for much of the United States on Wednesday, June 15 after a dangerous heat wave hit much of the Midwest and South on Tuesday. Temperatures reached triple digits in Chicago, combining with the humidity to make it feel even hotter there and in other sweltering cities.

More than 100 million people from Michigan to northern Florida are expected to be affected by midweek, and authorities have warned residents to stay hydrated, stay indoors when possible and be aware of health risks due to high temperatures, according to CNN.

Strong storms brought downpours and damaging winds to many of the affected areas on Monday, and more than 500,000 customers remained without power Tuesday night, including more than 350,000 in Ohio, according to PowerOutage.US.

According to CNN, “Temperatures could rise up to 20 degrees above average, raising heat indices to triple digits.” Excessive heat warnings are in effect for much of Illinois and Indiana along with parts of Minnesota, Iowa, Michigan and Ohio from Tuesday through Wednesday night, according to the National Weather Service.

Heat index values, which take into account temperature and relative humidity and indicate how hot it feels outdoors, approached and exceeded 105 degrees in some places, including Chicago, the weather service said, according to AP.
