The music world is mourning the death of a southern rock icon.

The music industry bids farewell to a legendary figure, who succumbed to a terrible disease that ultimately claimed his life.

Dicky Betts’ passing was confirmed in a statement to Rolling Stone magazine on Thursday, April 18.

Dickey Betts, the iconic singer, songwriter and guitarist for the Allman Brothers Band — whose piercing solos and emblematic songs defined Southern rock — has died at the age of 80.

The news was released by his manager, David Spero, who confirmed that he was suffering from cancer and chronic obstructive pulmonary disease.

The Betts family announced the death in a statement to Rolling Stone, highlighting his legacy and asking for privacy during this difficult time.

Betts, known for his charismatic personality, left an indelible mark on the rock scene.

Rolling Stone published the statement from Dickey Betts’ family.

«It is with profound sadness and heavy hearts that the Betts family announce the peaceful passing of Forrest Richard ‘Dickey’ Betts (December 12, 1943 – April 18, 2024) at the age of 80 years old,» they announced.

«The legendary performer, songwriter, bandleader, and family patriarch was at his home in Osprey, Florida, surrounded by his family. Dickey was larger-than-life, and his loss will be felt worldwide,» they continued.

«At this difficult time, the family asks for prayers and respect for their privacy in the coming days. More information will be forthcoming at the appropriate time.»

Although often in the shadow of his bandmates Gregg and Duane Allman, Betts was vital to the band.

His sinuous guitar style introduced unique elements into the band’s music, shining in hits like ‘Ramblin’ Man’ and ‘Jessica.’

Betts, who inspired characters like Russell in Almost Famous, always maintained his uniqueness.

From his distinctive mustache to his rugged demeanor, he was an iconic figure in the rock world.

Born Forrest Richard Betts in 1943 in West Palm Beach, Florida, Dickey Betts’  passion for music led him to join various bands before joining the Allman Brothers Band in 1969.

His contribution as the lead writer and guitarist was fundamental to the group, taking improvisation and guitar duels to new heights.

Songs like ‘Revival’ and ‘Blue Sky’ became Southern rock anthems.

Following the tragic death of Duane Allman in 1971, Betts took on a more prominent role in the band. With hits like ‘Ramblin’ Man’ and ‘Jessica’, the Allman Brothers Band reached the peak of popularity.

Farewell to a Legend

Betts’ solo album, Highway Call, released in 1974, showcased his versatility as a musician, blending genres like country, jazz and bluegrass.

Dickey Betts’ death leaves a void in the music industry.
