National Mutt Day has been celebrated twice a year since 2005 on July 31 and December 2. Mixed breeds often don’t get enough attention, so what better way to bring awareness than by checking out some celebrities and their dogs? We’ve got 12 celebrities who love their rescue mutts and we do to!

The star of ‘Veronica Mars’ and ‘The Good Place’ has earned a place in the hearts of animal rights activists. She and her family adopted Mr. Shakes, a mixed breed dog. This is great news, since Mr. Shakes was only 24 hours from being euthanized. Luckily Kristen decided to adopt him and give him a better life.

Selena Gomez is one of the Hollywood actresses and singers who has done the most for abandoned and abused dogs. She has adopted six of them! One such dog is Baylor, a mixed breed puppy that the Disney Channel actress adopted from an animal rescue in Canada to join her ‘pack’ at home: Willie, Wallace, Fina, Chip and Chazz.

Actor Jake Gyllenhaall

Acclaimed actor Jake Gyllenhaall is one of our favorite celebrities with a dog. He is known not only for his talent on the big screen, but also for his passion for rescue dogs. Jake has a faithful companion Cuss, who is a German shepherd whom he adopted several years ago and who accompanies him everywhere. He has even been caught by the paparazzi on his walks!

Dan Levy, star of ‘Schitt’s Creek’, made a plea on social media for people to adopt pets instead of buying them. He adopted a dog from a shelter in Los Angeles. Levy made the call to follow an action plan for responsible adoption, which includes determining if the person has the means to offer a decent life to the pets that are waiting to find a permanent home.

Miley Cyrus recently adopted a pit bull puppy named Angel, after losing her pet, Mary Jane, of the same breed. One of the reasons she adopted was because she knew there were a lot of abandoned pit bulls due to the stigma attached to them. The singer and actress regretted that there are thousands of animals sleeping on concrete floors and locked in cages, when they could be receiving the warmth of home and an adopted family.

Even Captain America has a sentimental side that can’t resist the allure of abandoned puppies. This is why, while filming a movie, he adopted his dog Dodger. During one scene, Evans had to enter an animal shelter, and it was there that he found Dodger, who today is one of the most famous dogs on Instagram.
