The extreme cold of winter has not yet fully departed.

Over the next week, blasts of icy air from the Canadian prairies will sweep through the central and eastern United States.

This will bring with them winter hazards such as intense snowfall and sub-zero temperatures.

Meteorologist Reneé Duff from AccuWeather explained that these new waves of cold air will impact the Northeast of the country from this weekend to the middle of next week.

Unlike the recent extreme cold, these waves of cold will be less severe.

Brandon Buckingham, also a meteorologist from AccuWeather, noted that temperatures will likely be about 8 degrees below the historical average for this time of year.

This phenomenon is considered more typical of winter.

Cities like Chicago and New York will experience colder nights, but not reaching the extreme cold of recent times.

A Different Winter Pattern

For example, Chicago could see nighttime temperatures around 10 degrees, while New York could approach 20 degrees.

However, in regions of northern New England, the cold could approach the Arctic levels of last week due to the persistence of Siberian air.

The cold air currents will be accompanied by fronts and storms from northwest Canada, known as «Alberta clippers.»

According to Duff, these storms will bring snow showers and wind gusts that will hinder visibility and create slippery road conditions.

Snowfall and Snow Storms

Although most of these snowfalls will be light, some more intense storms could cause rapid snow accumulations and near-zero visibility, a particularly dangerous phenomenon for motorists.

Snowstorms are most likely in the Great Lakes region and the Northeast, especially between Saturday and Tuesday.

Authorities recommend motorists in the Midwest and Northeast stay informed about weather conditions and download apps like AccuWeather to receive alerts.

Additionally, the snowfall could affect the region’s airports, causing delays due to slippery runways and aircraft de-icing operations.

Precautions and Warnings to Face Winter Storms in Central and Eastern US

Towards the end of next week, the extreme cold may lessen in the east of the country.

While the west will face colder, wetter, and stormier weather.

However, this does not mean the east will be completely free from winter storms.

As episodes of snow, rain, and winter mixes may still occur, detailed AccuWeather.
