The World Health Organization (WHO) has surprised the world with the announcement of a global strategic plan to contain mpox.

The disease, also known as monkeypox, has captured global attention following its designation as a «Public Health Emergency of International Concern.»

All this amid an alarming increase in cases in various regions.

Now, many are wondering, could another pandemic like that of coronavirus be unleashed? The WHO has provided an answer.

This plan aims to halt transmission among people through coordinated efforts at all levels, from international to local.

The WHO’s Director-General declared a public health emergency of international concern on August 14, leading to the urgent implementation of this plan.

It was also reported that it would span from September 2024 to February 2025.

Additionally, the plan seeks to minimize the transmission of the virus from animals to humans, one of the main routes of contagion in vulnerable areas.

The WHO has emphasized the importance of strategic vaccination, focusing on the highest-risk groups, such as close contacts of recent cases and healthcare workers.

The goal is to disrupt transmission chains and prevent the virus from continuing to spread in already affected communities.

The organization is also working closely with the Africa Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (Africa CDC).

As well as other international entities to improve coordination in responding to the outbreak.

In the Africa region, where the situation is most critical, the WHO and the Africa CDC will lead initiatives to control the disease.

Furthermore, the WHO has announced it will organize a virtual scientific conference to align research on mpox with outbreak control objectives.

This conference will feature the participation of prominent experts and international agencies.

In the words of the WHO Director-General, Dr. Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, «the mpox outbreaks in the Democratic Republic of the Congo and neighboring countries can be controlled and stopped.»

However, he emphasized that achieving this requires a globally coordinated effort, based on principles of equity, human rights, and global solidarity.

With this news, the WHO appears to reaffirm its commitment to lead the fight against mpox, working hand in hand with governments, to ‘prevent another pandemic.’
