- Constitutional amendment would be difficult
- Mentions options for a third term
Donald Trump has not ruled out running in the 2028 election, despite the U.S. Constitution’s restriction limiting presidents to two terms.
In a phone interview with NBC, Trump said that “many people want me to do it” and that it’s still “too early” to make a decision.
The U.S. Constitution states that a president may not serve more than two terms, but Trump hinted that there are “methods” to bypass this restriction.
Trump’s Constitutional Workaround and Third-Term Options
Amending the Constitution would be a difficult task, requiring the approval of two-thirds of Congress or the states, and ratification by three-fourths of them.
Trump floated the possibility of Vice President JD Vance running and then handing over the presidency to him, though he did not elaborate further on how this would work.
The former president concluded by saying there are “other ways” to accomplish that goal.
