Three years after being charged with manslaughter for the death of a man he hit during a vehicular incident, Mexican actor Pablo Lyle will finally face trial. His defense and the Miami prosecutor’s office said today that they are ready to go to trial on September 19 to determine the soap opera actor’s responsibility in the death of a Cuban man in Miami in 2019.

According to the AP, a six-person jury will decide if the actor, born in Mazatlan, Sinaloa, is guilty or not. If convicted, Pablo Lyle, who will turn 36 in November, could face up to 15 years in prison. Now he just has to wait….

In a brief judicial hearing in front of Judge Marisa Tinkler Mendez, the parties said that they do not foresee obstacles before the scheduled trial date. On September 8, however, there will be another evaluation hearing: «I do not foresee that you will have to resolve issues that require a lot of dispute between both parties,» Pablo Lyle’s lawyer, Philip Reizenstein, told the judge.

“A lot of things have already been resolved. We do not disagree on small things,” he said, after indicating that there is evidence and that what will be discussed is how the law is applied. Minutes earlier, prosecutor Shawn Abuhoff also said that the state is ready to go to trial.

Pablo Lyle’s legal issues began in April 2019 and there have been about a dozen postponements of the trial since then. The incident in question occurred near the Miami airport and was captured on security cameras. It happened at the end of March 2019, when Lyle’s brother-in-law was driving the actor, his wife and his two children to the airport.

The car in which he was traveling crossed paths with that of Juan Ricardo Hernández, a 63-year-old Cuban man who later died in a hospital from a brain injury. Lyle, who punched Hernandez in the face, has said that he acted in self-defense because he feared the man would attack him with a gun. That allegation, however, was dismissed by another judge and by a higher court, which returned the case to the Miami court to go to trial.

At today’s hearing, Pablo Lyle and his lawyer were present via Zoom. The actor made no statement and was not seen. He was only connected by audio. The judge said that some 300 people will be summoned, among whom the six main jurors and three substitutes will be selected for several days.

The prosecutor anticipated that he plans to present between seven and eight witnesses, although there could be more if necessary. Lyle’s defense indicated that he will call «several» witnesses, but did not specify how many. Neither party detailed who they will be.

«Jury selection could take longer than the trial proceedings themselves,» the judge said, estimating that seven witnesses’ testimony would represent three to four days of trial. Pablo Lyle’s lawyer, Reizenstein, said that one of the issues to consider for jury selection is the resonance that the case has had in the press, especially in Mexico.

After listening to him, the judge asked the parties to suggest questions that would be asked of those summoned before choosing them as jurors. It should be remembered that hours after the incident, Pablo Lyle was arrested at the Miami airport when he was preparing to travel to Mexico.
