Some 200 migrants, including Venezuelans, Haitians, Cubans and Central Americans, left on Monday in a new migrant caravan. It’s the seventh so far this year. They gathered in the Mexican city of Tapachula, in the Chiapas state bordering Guatemala, to continue their route to the United States, according to EFE.

The caravan departed from the Siglo XXI migration station headed for the community of Álvaro Obregón, a first stop about 15 kilometers from Tapachula, where they will set up a temporary camp pending a dialogue with authorities from the National Migration Institute (INM).

This new group of migrants, like the six that preceded them, has not waited for the regularization process carried out by the immigration authorities in Tapachula and made the decision to group together and walk along the coastal highway to the community of Alvaro Obregon.

A migrant from Cuba, named Carlos, told EFE that the only request made by this group of migrants is to have free transit through Mexico, since they don’t want to stay in Mexican territory. «The only thing we are looking for is to be granted a visa for humanitarian reasons because it’s the only way we’ll be able to advance to the northern border,» he explained. While Abel García, a migrant from Venezuela, recalled that other migrants who have walked in a caravan in previous weeks, have gotten a response from INM. Therefore, he said, the idea is to reach the community of Álvaro Obregón where there have been negotiations between migrants and immigration authorities.

“We want visas, we want visas!” This the migrants’ slogan as they faced the harsh climate and walked on the burning asphalt. On April 30, the sixth migrant caravan advanced 40 kilometers, until it reached the municipality of Huixtla, where it turned itself in to INM agents. Filed Under: Migrant caravan on the border.
