A hail of bullets claimed the life of one Hispanic man and left three others injured near the Mambo Costeño Bar Lounge in Winston-Salem.

Although North Carolina authorities arrested Austreberto Marín Figueroa as the alleged perpetrator of the homicide, the cause of the shooting is still under investigation.

The nightmare for the customers and employees began at midnight on Sunday, June 23, 2024.

When, without warning, shots were fired across the establishment.

Frightened witnesses called emergency numbers, contacting the Winston-Salem Police Department.

Rescue units and patrol cars were urgently needed at the location, 2915 Starlight Drive.

This is near the intersection of Clemmonsville Road and Old Lexington.

Upon arrival, officers found four gunshot victims.

The four hispanics involved in the shooting were later identified as Ángelo De La Cruz Calleja, 18; Rosa Medina, 54; Óscar López, 51; and Higinio López, 32.

Paramedics declared De La Cruz dead at the scene and transported the other three victims to the hospital.

The severity of the injuries to the three survivors is unknown.

Officers were at the hospital’s emergency room when Austreberto Marín Figueroa, also wounded by gunfire, was brought in.

Without providing many details in their report, the officers identified Austreberto Marín Figueroa as the suspected killer of De La Cruz Calleja.

Marín was arrested and that same night was booked into the Forsyth County Jail on murder charges.

«We are saddened by this act of violence in our community,» said William Penn Jr. at a press conference about the recent violent deaths in the city.

Regarding her son’s death, Deysy Calleja Nicasio remains silent. «I hope to see you in heaven,» are the only words she dedicates to her son on social media.
