Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila was arrested and charged with intoxication manslaughter after he caused a fatal accident while driving drunk. Officers of the Vehicular Crimes Division of the Houston Police Department (HPD) arrested the young man.

Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila, 22, will face his criminal proceedings before Judge Te’iva J. Bell of the 339th Criminal District Court in Harris County. Ávila is already sleeping in the county jail waiting for the judge to determine when the first hearing will be.

According to the Texas State Penal Code, the charge of intoxication manslaughter like the one faced by young Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila is punishable with a sentence of between 2 and 20 years in prison for whoever is found guilty of that crime after facing trial.

The legal documents of the case, consulted by MundoHispanico in Texas, detail that defendant Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila is not a citizen of the United States. However, the documents don’t detail where he’s from. The young man asked to be assigned a public defender.

He was driving his GMC Yukon at dawn

The documents in the case detail that at 3:40 a.m. on Sunday, May 22, 2022, Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila was driving his red GMC Yukon truck heading west. Upon reaching the intersection with Ranchester Drive, he made a turn.

However, the traffic light at the corner of Bellaire Boulevard and Ranchester Drive was red when Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila turned right in his GMC Yukon truck without stopping. A Ford Explorer pickup was on Ranchester Drive.

Andrea Balderas García was unable to avoid the brutal impact

Andrea Balderas García was driving the Ford Explorer. Her age is not specified. She was traveling south at normal speed and staying in her lane. Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila didn’t stop his GMC Yukon truck the two vehicles crashed.

Andrea Balderas García didn’t even have time to dodge Luis Alejandro Ávalos Ávila’s GMC Yukon. The strength of the impact of the two trucks was so forceful that both cars were totaled.

Other drivers who witnessed the crash called 911 to report the tragedy. When the  Houston Fire Department (HFD) paramedics arrived on scene, they couldn’t do anything for Andrea Balderas Garcia and she was pronounced dead.

The HPD officer who responded to the emergency call reviewed the young man responsible for the accident and, through field tests, determined that he was driving under the influence of alcohol. The officers arrested him at the scene.
