In a recent interview on Ventaneando, the Colombian actor shared how he got the role that changed his career by sheer chance.
Abello recalled that Fernando Gaitán, the creator of the telenovela, had designed the character for Guy Ecker.
However, Guy Ecker was committed to another series, Vegas, and could not accept the offer.

It was then that Jorge Enrique Abello, in an unexpected twist of fate, participated in a casting for the Bettys.
«That day, they asked me to help with the casting of the Bettys, but they didn’t choose any,» confessed the 56-year-old actor.
«There were about 10 or 8 actresses, and the next day they called me and said, ‘We didn’t choose anyone, but we really liked you.'»
Abello, surprised by the opportunity, commented that it was «really luck» how he got the role of Don Armando, which catapulted him to international fame.
In the interview, he also spoke about his relationship with Ana María Orozco, who played the protagonist of the telenovela, Beatriz Pinzón. «Good, as companions, well, it’s a relationship that’s been, what? 25 years, my God, a long time,» he said affectionately.
