Federal ICE agents carried out an immigration raid on Canal Street, New York this Tuesday, near Chinatown and SoHo.
Images and videos shared by NGOs and local media show multiple people being detained.

Dozens of bystanders and activists confronted the agents, filming the arrests on their phones and engaging in heated exchanges with federal officers at the scene.

Presence of specialized units

According to reports and videos, about 40 agents wearing vests labeled “Police,” “Federal Agent,” or “HSI” participated in the operation.
Local media have confirmed at least four arrests so far.

Transfer and tension at Federal Plaza

Those detained were taken to 26 Federal Plaza, the building where ICE maintains offices.
Local police deployed with riot control equipment in the area as tensions escalated outside the facility.

Context and repercussions

The ICE raid in New York took place just days after a commentator linked to Turning Point USA released a video urging ICE to take action against street vendors.
That same individual later claimed on social media that their post had inspired the operation.
