Tragedy on the border
On the other hand, the body of a migrant child, presumably from Guatemala, was found on Monday, August 22, 2022 by Mexican authorities on the Rio Grande, a natural border between Mexico and the United States. The body was recovered by members of the fire team from Mexico’s Ciudad Juárez, in the state of Chihuahua, in the north of the country.
The incident occurred when a mother and her daughter, both of Guatemalan origin, were trying to enter the United States by crossing the river. According to a statement from the Attorney General’s Office of the State of Chihuahua, North Zone, the child let go of her mother’s hand and was dragged under by the current, according to EFE.

Police and rescue personnel went to the scene to carry out a search and rescue operation in the river. Finally, after hours of searching, the child’s body was located in the riverbed in the northern area of Ciudad Juárez. The authorities indicated that the child’s mother, named Silvia, will receive psychological care and assistance through the Victims Care Unit of the Prosecutor’s Office, while her immigration status is resolved.
According to data from the United Nations, in 2021 in Mexico there were 728 deaths of migrants and so far this year 340 deaths have been recorded. The region is experiencing record migratory flow to the United States, whose Customs and Border Protection (CBP) has intercepted more than 1.6 million people so far in fiscal year 2022, which began last October.
