On July 29, 30-year-old Josh Crane spotted two swimmers who had gotten caught in the current and were struggling in the water, so he jumped into the American River to try to help them out of the jam they had gotten themselves into.

The two people were rescued but Crane died in the turbulent waters of the Californian river, according to CBS News. «This river could be potentially unforgiving,» said Capt. Parker Wilbourn with Metro Fire of San Francisco.

“My brother was a humble guy and anyone who knew him knew he had the biggest heart imaginable,” said his sister Jessica in an interview with ABC 10. «He would do anything, he would give you the shirt off his back and just be there.»

In addition to his standout bodybuilding performance, Crane was in his fourth year of medical school at UC Davis, hoping to earn his degree next spring. Search teams were unable to recover his body until the next day, July 30, said The Sun.

He lived to serve and help people,“ said his grieving sister. “Every minute I spent with him was the best smiles and the best time, and he was my best friend, my biggest motivator, my hero… and he showed it in everything he did.

His medical school classmates also mourned the departure of a great human being. “Our thoughts are with his family and loved ones as we support each other through this heartbreaking loss. He was an extraordinary young man dedicated to helping others,” the institution wrote on its website.

His classmates organized a GoFundMe campaign to help the family. They described Crane as a «role model» that «has inspired cohorts of future physicians to live and practice with compassion for everyone in need.»

“As a former Navy medic and current medic in training, Josh died the way he lived, giving his all to others. In just three years at UC Davis School of Medicine, Josh created a culture of love and inclusion in all aspects of our community. The presence of his uncompromising and unwavering friendship leaves an immense and eternal spirit in its wake,” they said about the late bodybuilder.
