The tall, gaunt actor with a smile that could be sweet or devilish was known for his unconventional characters.

Donald Sutherland played both Hawkeye Piece in M*A*S*H and the hippie tank commander in Kelly’s Heroes.

He is also remembered for portraying a doped-up professor in Animal House.

Before transitioning to a long career as a respected character actor, Sutherland epitomized the unpredictable and anti-establishment cinema of the 1970s.

Over the decades, Donald Sutherland showcased his range in more buttoned-up, yet still eccentric roles.

Among them were his performances in Ordinary People by Robert Redford and JFK by Oliver Stone.

Younger generations remember him for portraying President Coriolanus Snow in The Hunger Games.

In 2017, he was recognized by the Hollywood Academy with an honorary Oscar, though he was never nominated for any of his performances, as reported by Efe.
