Maksym Kagal, only 30 years old, was a famous kickboxing world champion in Ukraine. According to various media, including NIUS, the athlete was part of the Ukrainian military forces and died in combat defending the besieged city of Mariupol.

“He was an honest and decent man. Sleep well brother, you died here on earth, but we will avenge your death,” said his colleague and friend Oleg Skirta. He confirmed Maksym Kagal’s death on Twitter.

He was linked to the extreme right in Ukraine

According to NIUS, the young world champion was part of the «Azov Battalion», which has been linked to the extreme right in Ukraine. This battalion has become one of the strongest resistance groups working against the military forces of Vladimir Putin.

He became an ISKA (International Sport Karate Association) kickboxing world champion, according to NIUS. Also, he became the first adult world champion in Ukraine. The city that he died defending is perhaps one of the most important for the Russian invasion.
