«Why am I always tired?» This is perhaps one of the most common questions people are asking around the world. In the United States, 45% of adults who sleep between 7 and 8 hours a day report feeling tired or fatigued up to three times a week.

In general terms, fatigue by itself does not represent a serious health condition. However, it can be a symptom of an underlying condition that has not yet been diagnosed. Here are the signs you should watch out for.

1. Hormonal imbalance

Fatigue is one of the most common symptoms of hormonal imbalances, and can occur in both men and women who are going through a period where progesterone production is excessive. This can cause general discomfort and fatigue, which in many cases is not diagnosed early.

Hormonal imbalances can occur for various reasons. They could be the result of undiagnosed tumors, thyroid-related diseases, menopause in women between 40 and 50 years of age, or polycystic ovary syndrome in women of reproductive age.

2. Anemia could be the reason you are always tired

If you want to know why you are always tired, it may be appropriate to verify that all your blood levels are within normal ranges according to your age and lifestyle. It is possible that you suffer from anemia and it has not been diagnosed yet, causing moderate to severe fatigue.

In cases of anemia, fatigue can be extreme, and is often accompanied by other symptoms such as weakness, chest pain, pallor and, in the most severe cases, tachycardia. Therefore, it is important to see a doctor if one or more of these signs appear.

3. Cancer

According to data from the Cleveland Clinic, a large proportion of cancer patients have reported feeling a general malaise, described as a ‘crippling’ fatigue that is not the result of strenuous physical activity or activities that are performed regularly .

When fatigue is caused by some type of cancer, experts on the subject assure that it is progressive and does not subside, even when the patient has rested for hours or slept enough. In addition, it is accompanied by emotional discomfort that impacts the mental health of the individual.

4. Poor hydration can make you tired all the time

Poor hydration could cause chronic fatigue. When you don’t drink enough water the body makes adjustments that affect all organs and interrupt your sleep cycle, causing a lack of sleep that ends up producing more fatigue.

Hydration is a basic aspect in health care, and this will depend on the nutritional requirements of each individual, taking into account their weight, height, lifestyle and the place where they live.

5. Medications

Allergy medications often cause excessive drowsiness. Among these, antihistamines such as brompheniramine and those that are present in drugs such as sleep aids or antidepressants stand out.

If you wonder why you are always tired and take any of these medications, it is best to visit your GP, who will adjust your dose or recommend an alternative that suits your needs and allows you to have a better quality of life.

6. Heart condition

Heart conditions could be the reason behind your tiredness. According to doctors, extreme tiredness or difficulty performing certain activities could be caused by heart valve problems or undiagnosed heart failure.

This is a warning sign that should be addressed as soon as possible, since the patient could be experiencing dysfunction in the ventricles, by not pumping the blood necessary to oxygenate the heart and make it work properly.
