The death of Queen Elizabeth II has saddened the entire world. Elizabeth, the monarch with the longest reign that England has known, died on Thursday, September 8, 2022 at the age of 96. She passed away in the castle of Balmoral her beloved summer home in Scotland, having stabilized and modernized the royal institution through seven decades of great social change.

According to Daily Mail, Queen Elizabeth died with her eldest children, Charles, the new King of England, and Princess Anne at her bedside. Other members of the family, including Andrew, Edward, William and Harry, did not reach Balmoral in time to say goodbye to the monarch.

According to the Daily Mail, most of the family came to Scotland after the queen’s death as England began 10 days of mourning for its longest-serving monarch on Friday.

“’As much as you try to prepare for this moment, it just hits you like a ton of bricks. She is irreplaceable. I can’t believe we won’t see that mischievous smile again. There is a deep sense of shock,” said a royal household staff member.

Initially there was some confusion as Prince Harry and Meghan Markle’s spokesman said they would fly to Balmoral together to be with close relatives. This surprised many as spouses do not usually accompany royals at times like these.

However, it was later confirmed that Harry was traveling alone and he was scheduled to arrive at 7:52 at night. That means he was in the air when his grandmother’s death was publicly confirmed. Filed Under: Death of Queen Elizabeth II

King Charles III, on his first full day of office, left Balmoral in Scotland for London. He is expected to meet with Prime Minister Liz Truss, who was appointed just days earlier, and address the nation on Friday.

The king spent much of his 73 years preparing for the role. He takes the throne at a time when many Britons are concerned about the energy crisis, the rising cost of living, the war in Ukraine and the fallout from Brexit. Britain has begun a 10-day period of mourning, with bells tolling across the country and 96-gun salutes planned in London, one for each year of the queen’s long life. In a statement issued on Thursday, September 8, the King Charles III called his mother’s death, «A moment of the greatest sadness for myself and all members of my family.» He added: «I know her loss will be deeply felt throughout the country, the Realms and the Commonwealth, and by countless people around the world.”

Prime Minister Liz Truss, appointed by the queen just 48 hours earlier, declared the country «devastated» and called Elizabeth «the rock on which modern Britain was built.» British subjects outside Buckingham Palace wept as officials brought a notice confirming the queen’s death to the wrought-iron gates of the queen’s home in London. Hundreds soon gathered in the rain, and mourners laid dozens of colorful bouquets on the doorsteps. Filed Under: Death of Queen Elizabeth II
