What began as a criminal cell was never expected to end so violently. He began to attract the attention of the major drug traffickers in Mexico and carelessness would cost him his life. We are talking about El Cholo. But who was El Cholo, leader of the Nueva Plaza Cartel?

Carlos Enrique Sánchez Martínez, better known as ‘El Cholo’, was found dead by the Mexican authorities on March 18, 2021. The state of his corpse when it was found in the Hidalgo Garden in the Tlaquepaque Center caused an impact.

Who was El Cholo?

“El Traicionero, Carlos Enrique Sánchez Martínez alias ‘El Cholo’. Thanks to those who sent me their regards,” was written on signs that were attached to his body. It was wrapped in black bags and a blanket.

The shocking way his body was discovered gave rise to an investigation into who this man was and what he was involved in, or with whom. The way he was murdered revealed that it was a possible revenge killing.

El Cholo’s rise through the Jalisco Nueva Gerenación Cartel

According to El Sol de Mexico, the police investigation confirmed that El Cholo was the leader of the Nueva Plaza Cartel, which at some point collaborated with the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación (CJNG), and that he was practically El Mencho’s right hand.

This information was revealed through a powerful video distributed by the cartel led by Nemesio Oseguera, better known as El Mencho. In the recording one  could see El Cholo with a group of CJNG hitmen behind him.

He had ties to Mexican politicians

In the video, El Cholo admitted having links with the Secretary of Security of Mexico City, Omar García Harfuch, as well as saying he was backed by two Guadalajara Police commanders.

Also El Cholo was credited with killing 11 people in La Jauja neighborhood in Tonalá, as well as throwing a grenade at the American consulate in December 2018. He pled guilty to all the acts previously revealed, according to El Sol de México.

El Cholo was killed for disloyalty to El Mencho

However, what attracted more attention is why the CJNG was torturing and killing one of its own members. According to Infobae, in 2017 El Cholo dedicated himself to bringing people together to form the Nueva Plaza Cartel, a criminal group that declared war on the CJNG to try to take control of the drug market in Guadalajara.

This rupture occurred after the murder of El Colombiano, financial operator of the CJNG, because as soon as the news spread, El Mencho ordered El Cholo’s murder, since he felt betrayed by his hitman boss and right-hand man.
