The name of the Pirate de Culiacán was once again in the spotlight after the violence and drug blockades on the night of August 9 in Jalisco. Juan Luis was on the eye of the hurricane again because of his relationship with Ricardo Ruiz Velasco, alias «Double R», according to Infobae.

According to Infobae, Double R or «El Tripa», as he is also known, is a lieutenant of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación. The Ministry of National Defense indicated that the burning of vehicles in Zapopan was the result of a meeting between Ruiz Velasco and another leader of the cartel, identified as Gerardo González Ramírez, alias «El Apá».

It is said that the Pirate of Culiacán is among Double R’s many victims, along with the Venezuelan model Daisy Ferrer in 2012 and the Secretary of Tourism of Jalisco, José de Jesús Gallegos Álvarez who was head of that institution when he was killed in 2013 , according to Infobae.

The murder of the Pirate de Culiacán was reported weeks after a narco-video of him was released in which he hurled insults at one of the most wanted drug lords by the Mexican authorities: Nemesio Oseguera Cervantes, alias El Mencho, leader of the Cartel Jalisco Nueva Generación.

In December 2017, Juan Luis Lagunas, better known as the Pirate of Culiacán, went to the popular bar Menta2 Cantaros, located in the municipality of Zapopan, Jalisco, where he was last seen alive, drinking and enjoying music.

According to the State Prosecutor’s Office, an armed commando burst into the music venue and riddled the young man with bullets. It is presumed that the group of assassins was led by Double R, although he was not the only one identified as the alleged perpetrator of the murder.

According to information revealed by the journalist Hector de Mauleon another of the main suspects in this case is Emilio Alexandro Pinedo, alias «El Sobrino». After his arrest in 2018 in Zapopan, various photos of murdered people were found on his cell phone, allegedly including that of the Pirate de Culiacán.

Thus, from that year on, the authorities concentrated their efforts on arresting Ruiz Velasco, since by capturing him there was the possibility of finding out the location of El Mencho and putting him behind bars for his crimes.
