  • Cuban families will no longer be divided.
  • The Cuban Family Reunification Parole program was suspended in 2017.
  • What does this mean?

An activist in Miami described uniting Cuban families as «humanitarian and necessary». The Citizenship and Immigration Service (USCIS) has announced it is resuming the Cuban Family Reunification Parole program (CFRP) that had been suspended since 2017.

United States Citizenship and Immigration Services said in a statement that it has already begun mailing notices to CFRP petitioners with instructions about their interviews.

On August 18, the United States Citizenship and Immigration Service began conducting interviews at the United States embassy in Havana. However, they explained that they have limited time and capacity to conduct them.

They are trying to do everything possible to reunite families. Ramón Saúl Sánchez, leader of the Democracy Movement, said that the CFRP is very important for the United States because «it helps to rebuild what the Cuban dictatorship destroyed, especially what has to do with family.»

Sánchez also said that: «The regime has divided families and this program is an act of humanity and of necessity. Those who cannot reunite with their families in the United States jump into the sea to get to this country,” Sánchez said.

According to the US Coast Guard, more than 5,000 Cubans trying to reach US shores have been intercepted between October 1, 2021 and August 31 of this year. In 2021 and 2020 only 838 and 49 Cubans were intercepted throughout the fiscal year.

The CFRP allows US citizens and legal permanent residents to apply for parole for their relatives in Cuba. The parole is an authorization that allows a person to come to the United States under special circumstances according to the US Embassy in Cuba.

If granted, family members can enter the United States without having to wait for their immigrant visa cases to be processed. Once in the United States, program beneficiaries may apply for work authorization. FILED UNDER: Cuban family reunification parole

The Trump administration suspended this program in 2017. His administration also substantially reduced embassy staff in Cuba after thirty US diplomats suffered mysterious «health incidents» whose causes were never clarified.

According to EFE, the program allows certain eligible US citizens and residents to apply for permission for their family members in Cuba to live in the US while waiting for lawful permanent resident status. FILED UNDER: Cuban family reunification parole
