Pujols, batting first in the seventh inning, hit his seventh home run of the last 10 games and the 14th of his great season, his last in the Major Leagues. The ball left the field between left and center. A thunderous cheer erupted from the crowd of 29,716 at Wrigley Field as the three-time NL MVP turned the bases for his second hit of the night.

Drew Smyly became the 449th pitcher to give up a homer to the 42-year-old Pujols, tying Barry Bonds’ major league record. The game was the 940th in which Pujols had at least two hits and the player broke a tie with Paul Waner for 10th place on the career list.

Dominican slugger Albert Pujols homered to produce the only run of the game and left-hander Jordan Montgomery wove a jewel from the mound as the St. Louis Cardinals beat the Chicago Cubs 0-1 on Monday.

The victory for the Cardinals was their eighth in a row, thus reaching 70 wins so far this season with only 51 losses, which keeps them as leaders of the National League Central Division. Pujols, who this Monday was selected Player of the Week along with his partner Paul Goldscmidt, has chartered six full-round clubs in his last seven games and seven in his last 10 commitments. Montgomery (7-3) went the full route, pitching all nine innings on just one hit to earn his first complete game and first shutout of the season.

The left-hander, who came to the Cardinals from the Yankees at the trade deadline in the Major League market, allowed a double by Dominican Christopher Morel in the third inning, to complete his great performance facing one more than the minimum, since only 28 rivals went to the plate. The control of the left-hander, who only needed 99 pitches to complete the game, was so finely tuned that he didn’t allow a walk. Filed Under: Albert Pujols 700 home runs
