The memorable love story between one of the most powerful and dangerous drug traffickers in Mexico and the niece of an important politician shocked many and inspired others. Today we tell you about the song that Alex Lora composed for Caro Quintero and Sara Cosío.

Alex Lora, accompanied by Sergio Mancera, Arturo Labastida, Rubén Soriano and Mariano Soto recorded a “narco-song” hidden between blues and sixties rhythms. It’s called Sara and it’s the eighth song on the album Otra Tocada Más from 1988. The song dazzled audiences.

The explosive rock star who was born in Puebla and raised in the (then) Federal District performed the song with the singer-songwriter Lalo Chico, one of the band’s longest-serving guitarists. The protagonists of the narco romance were Rafael Caro Quintero, leader of the Guadalajara Cartel and Sara Cosío niece of Guillermo Cosío Vidaurri. They were the most controversial couple in the eighties.

Sara, shouted Caro Quintero. Oh, Sara, how I love you. Even if your family doesn’t want to believe it, tell everyone that my love for you is sincere. Although right now it is far behind, now that it comes out, we smoke a whole kilo. These are the lyrics of the song.

He was one of the great drug lords who is always wanted by the Mexican authorities, and she was the niece of an important politician and heiress to a great fortune. It was an “impossible relationship”. Both frequented the most exclusive nightclubs in the Perla de Occidente and the most expensive restaurants in the city of Guadalajara, according to Chilango.

The relationship prospered after several attempts, approaches, talks and evenings, but of course, it was not approved of by Cosío’s family. They even refused the expensive gifts the drug trafficker offered in an attempt to buy their affection. We went out looking, far from the country (…) Sara, Sara, Sara ra ra ra…, El Tri’s song continues to give details of their relationship.

According to Infobae the reference dates back to 1985, when the United States Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA) saw the murder of undercover agent, Enrique “Kiki” Camarena, in Mexico. They blamed Caro Quintero and began hunting him down.

The drug trafficker and Sara Cosío fled in a private jet bound for San Rafael de Ojo de Agua in Alajuela, Costa Rica, where they took refuge in the luxurious Quinta La California. The apparent love affair was reported to the Mexican authorities as a possible kidnapping by the capo.

Quintero never expected this to be the beginning of the end of their love story. Thanks to the interception of Sara’s family’s phones, they were quickly able to find the couple’s location and arrest them.

Sara Cosío stayed out of the public eye for several years after the scandalous romance that led to the fall of the Narco de Narcos, and, as far as is known, the couple did not get back together after their arrests. However, there are still memories of their forbidden love.
