  • Euro Foods Inc. ordered the recall of nearly 120,000 pounds of salami stick products.
  • The products were recalled due to possible salmonella contamination.
  • A salmonella outbreak between September 18 and October 18 has affected 10 states.

The U.S. Department of Agriculture’s Food Safety and Inspection Service (FSIS) confirmed on Wednesday that Euro Foods Inc. ordered the recall of nearly 120,000 pounds of salami stick products that might be contaminated with salmonella.

According to the recall notice, the salami sticks included in the recall had been shipped to retail stores across the country and exported to Bermuda. The product contamination could be due to the salmonella outbreak that occurred between September 18 and October 18 in 10 states.

In late October, the agency issued a public health alert regarding certain products from Euro Foods based in Freeland, Pennsylvania. However, it failed to issue a recall at the time, believing that the affected products were no longer circulating, according to Boston 25 News.

The agency then determined that potentially contaminated products were still being sold. In particular, it was confirmed that one product at a retail store and two samples of Citterio salami sticks previously collected by the California Department of Public Health tested positive for salmonella.

Wednesday’s official recall was limited to 2-ounce packages of Citterio “Premium Italian-Style Salame Sticks ALL NATURAL” with an expiration date of January 23, 2022. The affected products also carry the establishment number 4010, which is found within the USDA mark of inspection.

FSIS has been working with the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention (CDC) and the state public health partners to investigate a salmonella outbreak in 10 states, which has made at least 31 people sick reported, Boston 25 News.

Potentially contaminated salami products may be in pantries

FSIS is concerned that some potentially contaminated salami products may have found their way into consumer pantries or refrigerators. So anyone who has purchased the affected products is encouraged to dispose of them or return them to the store.

The CDC advised that consumers must use hot soapy water or a dishwasher to wash all items, containers, and surfaces that may have come in contact with potentially contaminated products.

If you get any of the symptoms, stay alert.

According to the agency, most people who contract salmonella experience diarrhea, fever, vomiting, dehydration, and stomach cramps. Symptoms usually begin between six hours and six days after ingesting the bacteria.

Although most of those who become ill generally recover without treatment after four to seven days, children younger than 5 years old, adults 65 years old and above, and immunosuppressed individuals may experience more serious illnesses that require medical treatment or hospitalization.
