Recall of onions sold at Publix and Wegmans

• A recall of onions sold in five US states is ordered.

A recall of Vidalia onions was ordered in the United States after it was discovered that they could be infected with the Listeria monocytogenes bacteria. A&M Farms of Lyons, Georgia issued a recall on whole Vidalia onions from a specific lot because they may be infected with Listeria.

According to BGR, the potentially contaminated onions were sold in five states at Wegmans and Publix stores. Consumers are urged to take special precautions and avoid consuming them because doing so could make them seriously ill.

The company announced the recall and later the United States Food and Drug Administration (FDA) shared the official press release. According to the FDA, the bacteria is «an organism that can cause serious and sometimes fatal infections in young children, frail or elderly people, and others with weakened immune systems.»

Internal company testing detected the Listeria bacteria on a single pack line. As a result, and out of an abundance of caution, the company ordered a recall of the onions packed on that line between June 20 and 23. They were sold in five states.

Where the onions were sold

The onions were available in bulk in the produce section of some retail stores, including Publix and Wegmans. Customers can identify the recalled onions by purchase location, PLU 4149, and the Little Bear branding on the PLU label. The company said the products were available at Wegmans stores in the Rochester, Massachusetts area and at Erie West and Erie Peach Street Wegmans stores in Pennsylvania.

«Although healthy people may experience only short-term symptoms, such as high fever, severe headache, stiffness, nausea, abdominal pain, and diarrhea, Listeria infection can cause miscarriages and stillbirths among pregnant women,» the FDA warned.
