The Uvalde school district police chief, Pedro “Pete” Arredondo, has resigned from his position on the City Council after harsh criticism of his slow response to the shooting that ended the lives of 19 children and two teachers, according to the Efe agency. Arredondo’s decision announced in the Uvalde Leader-News.

The police officer had been elected as a councilman for District 3 of Uvalde, on May 7. He was sworn in on the 31st of that month, only a week after the shooting at Robb Elementary school in Uvalde, Texas. A couple of days ago, he was suspended and a couple of hours ago, his resignation was announced.

In the statements he made to the local newspaper, Arredondo stressed that he had made that decision after a long time, considering «what is best for Uvalde». He decided that it was essential to offer his resignation from the City Council. Arredondo believes resigning will help city staff avoid being distracted by the controversy surrounding him.

“After much consideration, I regret to inform those who voted for me that I have decided to step down as a member of the city council for District 3. The mayor, the city council, and the city staff must continue to move forward without distractions. I feel this is the best decision for Uvalde,” Arredondo told the Uvalde Leader-News.

One of the points he made during his interview with the Uvalde Leader-News was that the Uvalde community follow the lead of other communities who have survived similar tragedies. Arredondo pointed out that they should keep praying for the families that were affected by this attack and continue supporting each other.

“As we continue to grieve over the tragedy that occurred on May 24th, we pray for the families involved and our community. Uvalde has a rich history of loving and supporting thy neighbor and we must continue to do so. In speaking with other communities that have had similar tragedies, the guidance has been the same… continue to support the families, continue to support our community, and definitely, to keep our faith,” Arredondo told Uvalde Leader-News. The bad news for Arredondo does not end there. On June 22, he was suspended from his position as Uvalde school district police chief, although he has not resigned from that position and still holds the title, said Efe agency. Pete Arredondo has been heavily criticized for his response to the massacre.

Arredondo’s suspension came just a day after Texas Department of Public Safety Director Steven McCraw testified before a Texas Senate committee and said Arredondo made «terrible decisions» while the massacre was taking place, the police reported.  Filed Under: Police Chief Uvalde Resigns
