The situation is already becoming worrying for some experts, to the point where Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus, director general of the WHO, has called a meeting to determine if this outbreak of monkeypox that has already reached many countries in the world represents a global emergency.

«I have decided to convene the Emergency Committee under the International Health Regulations on Thursday next week, to assess whether this outbreak represents a public health emergency of international concern,” Tedros Adhanom Ghebreyesus announced on Tuesday.

“We think that it also needs a coordinated response due to geographic spread,” added the WHO director general, who also acknowledged that the virus, coming from Africa, has presented “unusual” behavior by spreading outside the areas where it is endemic.

Although monkeypox has not spread with the same speed that Covid-19 did in early 2020, there is a possibility that the authorities will declare an international health emergency for monkeypox just as they did with the coronavirus. That would mean that the WHO and its expert advisers consider the disease to be a global threat, The Associated Press reported.

According to US health authorities, anyone can contract the monkeypox virus and “it can be spread when a person comes into contact with the virus from an infected animal, an infected person, or materials contaminated with the virus. The virus can also cross the placenta from the mother to the fetus.”

“The virus can also be spread through direct contact with bodily fluids or sores from an infected person or with materials that have been in contact with bodily fluids or sores, such as clothing or bedding.” The CDC clarified that it can also “spread during intimate person-to-person contact, including during sexual intercourse, as well as activities such as kissing, hugging, or touching body parts with monkeypox sores. At this time, it is not known if monkeypox can be spread through semen or vaginal fluids.»
