  • Mexico and the United States negotiate visas for migrants.
  • They will be temporary work visas.
  • Both countries study the possibility of ending Title 42.

The governments of Mexico and the United States agreed to negotiate the issuance of temporary work visas to migrants from Mexican territory and some Central American countries. In the meetings that Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard Casaubón had with the secretary of the US Department of Homeland Security, Alejandro Mayorkas, and Secretary of State Anthony Blinken in Washington, Ebrard discussed creating a strategy for Central America.

“We essentially proposed there that we hold a conference in Central America to present the number of jobs we can create in the coming months. Not so much the investment amounts, but how many jobs we can create, let’s say, by unifying efforts. Because otherwise we do not see how it is possible to achieve a significant reduction in migratory flows. If there is not that, we think it would be very difficult,” said the foreign minister at a press conference.

He agreed with Mayorkas to create a working group that will try to expand the temporary visa programs for workers from Mexico and Central America with the aim of reducing the migratory flow to the United States, according toEl Universal.

This, in the face of Mayorkas’s assertions that the upcoming elimination of Title 42 — that is, the end of the border health restrictions imposed by the Trump administration — will increase the migratory flow to the US, while Ebrard said that Mexico will not give a free pass to migrants.

For his part, President Andrés Manuel López Obrador assured that he will put «more protection on the southern border» as part of the agreements with the United States to curb illegal immigration.

“We are working in a coordinated way with the United States government helping, and yes, we have to protect the southern border, although it seems contradictory, paradoxical, because it is not convenient to cross the country, it is very risky, and we have to take care of them.»

“We have faced the most unfortunate cases of crimes against migrants on the northern border. We are going to maintain more protection on the southern border, but insisting that its causes must be addressed. Migrants do not leave their towns and do not abandon their families for pleasure. They do it due to necessity”.

In his press conference, at the National Palace, President López Obrador pointed out that, yesterday, Foreign Minister Marcelo Ebrard met with the US Secretary of State , Antony Blinken, and among the agreements reached, temporary work visas were increased for Central America.
