After the important capture of one of the most wanted drug traffickers in Mexico and the United States on July 15, 2022 , there was someone in particular who took the credit for finding him. Today we are talking about Max, the Mexican Navy dog ​​who located Caro Quintero.

On the afternoon of July 15, the Secretary of the Mexican Navy (SEMAR) confirmed the apprehension of the famous drug trafficker Rafael Caro Quintero, founder of the Guadalajara Cartel, who was discovered in the town of San Simón, in Choix, Sinaloa.

In a statement, the SEMAR reported that, «The target was located in the bushes by a canine element of this Institution.» The canine element was Max, a six-year-old Bloodhound with extensive experience in the Navy.

According to Infobae, Max is a female Bloodhound known for her excellent tracking skills. She specializes in finding weapons and money in the field, which is why she was included in the successful operation against Caro Quintero. According to ACE, this six-year-old dog is part of the Urban Search and Rescue Unit of the Mexican Navy and is paired with another dog named Green.

Max is a Boodhound so she has the ability to find people and drugs through her keen sense of smell in open spaces. She’s usually very useful both in carrying out relief actions as well as for security.

The Mexican Navy has 60 canine pairs and 23 of them belong to the Canine Unit of the General Headquarters in the country’s capital. It is estimated that the Armed Forces have about 300 canine pairs that help locate drugs, explosives and people, according to ACE.

In 2019, SEMAR announced the incorporation of Max and Green in order to strengthen operations «to locate people who are in a situation of risk generated by a natural phenomenon or accident.» According to Infobae the dog was born on April 20, 2016 and currently weighs 78 pounds. According to SEMAR, she is projected to retire in 2023, so she is in the final stretch of her career within the canine pairs team.

According to the official SEMAR statement, members of the Attorney General’s Office (FGR) also participated in the capture of the «Narco de narcos», in coordination with the Navy. Federal agents located the criminal who had two outstanding arrest warrants and a request for extradition to the United States.

Max joins other Mexican canines who have moved the country for their roles in rescue operations. Frida is one of the best known for her work after the earthquake that shook Mexico City in September 2017.
