The lie didn’t last long. A mother identified as Jessica Cantu was arrested by police in Texas after an autopsy revealed that her little girl, just two years old, did not die by shooting herself in the head as Cantu had originally claimed.

The New York Post reported, on Friday, June 17, that the Texas mother was detained after claiming her 2-year-old daughter had died after accidentally shooting herself while playing with a gun. However, the girl’s autopsy later revealed that she hadn’t actually shot herself in the head.

The tragedy death of Jessica Cantu’s daughter

Jessica Cantu, 35, was arrested last week and charged with child endangerment, about four months after her little girl, named Julez Gonzalez, died at her home in San Antonio, Texas, according to Fox29. “Police were initially informed that the girl had shot herself,” the San Antonio Sheriff’s Office said Thursday.

«Through the course of the investigation investigators gathered additional evidence including the medical examiner’s report that determined the child had not shot herself,» added the San Antonio Sheriff’s Office.

Julez González’s autopsy revealed that she could not have shot herself because the gun was fired at a distance, not up close. Her mother had initially told police that she was in the bathroom with her 4-year-old daughter when she heard a loud «pop» on the night of February 18. She also asserted that, at that time, she had left Julez lying in bed watching a movie on a cell phone.

Jessica Cantu and her 32-year-old boyfriend, identified as Joshua Christopher Ramírez, who owned the gun, ran into the bedroom and found the girl, who was taken to University Hospital in critical condition, where she died on February 27, according to KSAT.

Bail was set for Jessica Cantu

Bail was set for the victim's mother.

The man was arrested at that time for being the alleged owner of the weapon that killed the little girl. The prosecutor has not ruled out filing additional charges against both, the New York Post reported. Jessica Cantu is still being held on $150,000 bond.

According to KSAT, police said Jessica Cantu «intentionally and knowingly placed the victim in imminent danger by allowing her to be in the presence of a firearm in the possession of an offender with a violent criminal record,» as her boyfriend was a convicted felon who was about to go sell drugs at a local motel.
