  • Instagram started an alpha test of the Subscriptions feature in January.

In an apparent effort to compete with creator subscription services like Patreon, Instagram began an alpha test of a Subscriptions feature in January. Recently, Instagram head Adam Mosseri announced an expansion of test features, along with some updates on how the last six months of development have gone.

When the feature began testing in January, only 10 creators had access to it, including Olympic gymnast Jordan Chiles and astrologer Aliza Kelly. The initial alpha release supported subscriber-only stories, subscriber badges, and subscriber-only live streams. Now, according to Mosseri, tens of thousands of creators have access and the list of subscriber-only features is expanding.

New updates to Instagram Subscriptions include subscriber group chats, subscriber-only reels and posts, and a subscribers-only tab on a creator’s profile, so paying fans can see content they’ve unlocked access to.

“A really important thing to creators everywhere is sustainable income,” Mosseri said via video. «At the end of the day, if you’re a creator, you’re a business, and a great way to establish some sustainable and predictable income is through subscriptions.»

At this time, Meta does not take any cuts from creator earnings on its platforms like Facebook and Instagram. This policy will remain in effect until 2024. Originally, it was supposed to end in 2023, but CEO Mark Zuckerberg announced last month that this setup would be extended for another year.

This is a clear attempt to lure creators into monetizing Meta products in the long run, but for now, it’s a big deal for creators, reported El Universal. Filed Under: Instagram Subscription

Zuckerberg hasn’t made clear how much of a cut Meta will take once this introductory period ends, but he said last year that it would be «less than the 30% that Apple and others will take.»

However, in the Metaverse, the company will take a 47.5% cut from digital asset sales: 30% through the Meta Quest store and 17.5% through the Horizon Worlds platform. Filed Under: Instagram Subscription.

How can users subscribe?

For all those who want to subscribe, they will simply have to go to the creator’s profile and click on the «Subscribe» button to see the prices and benefits that they will receive. If the option is not available in the profile, it is because the user has not yet activated the Subscriptions feature.

This feature is only available in the United States and the cost is between $0.99 and $99.99, according toENTER.CO. However, this may change when it is available in other countries. Filed Under: Instagram Subscription
