DEVASTATING HEAT. Summer isn’t here yet, but in some parts of the United States it will feel like it already is, since a scorching heat wave bringing record temperatures will hit this weekend. Take the necessary precautions to cope with the intense weather.

Forecasters have warned that states on the East Coast will have to deal with temperatures of up to 100° F this weekend thanks to a phenomenon called the “Bermuda high”, which usually appears during hurricane season, but came earlier this year.

The Bermuda high is a high pressure system that is located over the Atlantic ocean and, depending on the time of year and other factors, can affect the movement, trajectory and strength of the tropical systems that pass through the Atlantic basin.

Ultimately, the «Bermuda high» may end up determining the direction warm weather will head, if and where it will make landfall —  as it will in the United States this weekend. The system is bringing a scorching heat wave to the East Coast.

Where will the heat wave hit?

This heat wave will hit the eastern part of the country, especially coastal states such as New York, New Jersey, Massachusetts, Pennsylvania, Vermont, Maryland, and Washington, DC. Residents of this area should be prepared for really hot temperatures.

Record temperatures will begin to be felt on Friday and will last until Saturday, just before some scattered showers bring better weather conditions with some humidity to the area. Meteorologists warn that, for example, in Massachusetts the temperature could reach 90° F. In other parts of the country they could even reach 100° F.

Massachusetts suffered another heat wave last weekend, when temperatures above 80°F were recorded, but this week’s system is shaping up to be a bit more intense. In fact, the National Weather Service (NWS) explained that the residents of Pioneer Valley could be be dealing with the most intense temperatures in the state this weekend.

The NWS is also forecasting temperatures in New Jersey to hit 96° F on Saturday, which would break the record high of 94° in 1934. By this Saturday, temperatures in parts of New York and New Jersey could approach 90°, according to The Sun.

In general the weather will be sunny and humid throughout the area over the weekend. In Newark, for example, temperatures of 92°F are forecast for Saturday, which will be quite close to the May 21, 1996 record high of 96°F. Experts say the heat is also likely to trigger some isolated thunderstorms on Sunday.

In the midst of a heat wave, it is important to take some precautions such as limiting outdoor activity, avoiding excessive exposure to the sun, staying constantly hydrated and seeking a cool shelter. Remember that pets also suffer from inclement weather.
