EXTREME TEMPERATURES ALERT. A crushing HEAT WAVE will hit the US for six days in May. It will bring temperatures that could break records by exceeding 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

Forecasters expect record temperatures of over 90 degrees to hit the southern and central United States over the next several days, so millions of residents are now under serious heat wave warning.

“If you have outdoor plans, be sure to practice heat safety and stay hydrated,” warned the Austin and San Antonio office of the National Weather Service (NWS) regarding the impact that such high temperatures could have on people.

Over the next six days, experts expect an intense spring heat wave to hit parts of Texas, the Rocky Mountains, and the Midwest. But that’s not all, because the heat will also push fire risks from critical to extreme over a wide area from New Mexico to West Texas.

The hot weather began to be felt in the central United States on Monday, and on Tuesday it spread to St Louis, Missouri, before expanding to Nebraska, Iowa, Illinois and several other states in the southern part of the US on Wednesday. As early as Thursday, some thermometers in the Great Lakes area are expected to register temperatures of over 90 degrees Fahrenheit.

According to the St Louis office of the National Weather Service, the stiflingly hot weather arrives because of “an unusually warm air mass which will bring several days of surface temperatures approaching the daily records of early May.»

Where could record temperatures be felt?

The hot weather has been generated by a high-pressure «heat dome» pushing through the middle section of the country. A stream of cooler air from the northwestern United States is expected to push the core of the heat toward Texas and the southern United States by the end of the week and into the weekend.

For now, Houston, Little Rock, Shreveport, Kansas City and St Louis are among some of the big cities that could see record temperatures in the coming days, The Sun reported.

Meteorologists say it is a ‘heat dome’. «High-pressure circulation in the atmosphere acts like a dome or cap, trapping heat at the surface and favoring the formation of a heat wave,» explains the National Office of Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA).

“Summertime means hot weather — sometimes dangerously hot — and extreme heat waves have become more frequent in recent decades. Sometimes, the scorching heat is ensnared in what is called a heat dome. This happens when strong, high-pressure atmospheric conditions combine with influences from La Niña, creating vast areas of sweltering heat that gets trapped under the high-pressure «dome.» They warn that HEAT WAVE will hit the US for six days.
