Do you know the story of the I-95 Killer? His name was Gary Ray Bowles, a serial killer that terrorized the United States in the 1990s, as he committed at least six brutal murders, in addition to crimes like sexual assault, theft and weapon possession, among others.

Gary Ray Bowles’s story has been forever engraved in history; his victims, most of them adults, were John Hardy Roberts, 59; David Alan Jarman, 39; Milton Joseph Bradley, 72; Alverson Carter Jr., 47; Albert Morris, 38, and Walter Hinton, 47.

Who was Gary Ray Bowles?

Gary Ray Bowles was born on January 25, 1962, in Clifton Forge, Virginia, the United States, although he lived for many years in Rupert, West Virginia. His childhood was marked by the death of his father and her mother’s subsequent marriages.

Violence was always part of this serial killer’s life, since his second stepfather abused him on several occasions, in addition to attacking his mother and brother. The abuse ended when he was able to defend himself for the first time, but this caused him to live on the streets for several years, where he had to start a life as a sex worker, serving people of his same gender.

Gary Ray Bowles’s initial crimes were registered in 1982, when he was arrested for the first time, accused of having sexually attacked one of his girlfriends. For that crime, he was sentenced to six years in prison, and then he got two more for an armed robbery he committed when he was released after serving his time.

Between his first crime and the first official murder Bowles committed that there’s official record of, 14 years passed. On March 15, 1994, Gary Ray Bowles killed his first victim, John Hardy Roberts, a 54-year-old man who had offered him a place to stay. To this crime four more were added, which happened in the states of Florida, Maryland and Georgia.

Modus Operandi

Gary Ray Bowles’s modus operandi was closely linked to his lifestyle and the fact that he was a sex worker. All his victims were adult men who had had sex with him and owned credit cards or cash.

The police determined that Gary Ray Bowles had sex with his victims to then beat them and strangle them. Then, he would proceed to steal all their credit cards and cash and would flee the crime scene.

Besides being one of the most feared serial killers of the time, Gary Ray Bowles made it to the list of the FBI’s 10 most wanted fugitives in 1994. When the police arrested him on November 22, 1994, Bowles confessed to six murders.

He also assured that the reason he killed his clients was because, in 1991, his girlfriend had suffered a miscarriage after learning he had sex with men for money. For that reason, Bowles harbored resentment towards his clients, which was his motivation to commit the murders.

During trial, Gary Ray Bowles provided more details about how he had killed the men; he threw a rock of approximately 40 pounds to one of them, to then asphyxiate him with a towel. He strangled another of his victims.

In 1999, the jury confirmed their verdict and sentenced him to death by lethal injection. He was executed on August 22, 2019, in Florida’s State Prison. According to witnesses, the killer’s last meal was hamburgers, fries and bacon.
