A new vehicle recall worries Americans. Ford has recalled about 200,000 SUVs in the United States because the air conditioning blower motor could fail and catch fire.

The recall covers model year 2015 to 2017 Ford Expeditions and Lincoln Navigators. In documents provided to regulators, the Dearborn, Michigan automaker said it has reports of 25 fires in the engines.

Thirteen fires were just in the blower motor area, but 12 involved extensive damage to SUVs. Three fires damaged structures and one damaged another vehicle, according to The Associated Press.

One person reported hand and finger injuries and all fire reports indicated the vehicles were running at the time of the incident, Ford said in documents released Thursday, Sept. 1, by the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.

Dozens of issues have been reported

He says some customers have reported fans not working, burning smells, or smoke coming out of the vents while the vehicle is running.

Dealers will replace the front blower motor assembly at no cost to owners, who will be notified beginning September 12. It’s the second recent recall of Expeditions and Navigators due to fire issues.

In July, Ford expanded a May recall to 66,000 of the 2021 model year SUVs. The company told owners to park the vehicles outdoors due to a series of engine fires that could occur while the ignitions are off.

Ford attributed the cause to printed circuit boards that are susceptible to an electrical short. The company said at the time it had reports of 21 fires and one injury, but no reports of fires spreading to buildings.

About a third of SUVs recalled in July 2022 could be immediately repaired by removing the ground wire, Ford said. The other recall covers certain 2020 to 2022 Ford Escape and Lincoln Corsair SUVs, as well as some Ford Maverick small trucks. All have 2.5-liter hybrid or plug-in hybrid engines.

Ford says that if the engine fails, significant amounts of oil and fuel vapor can seep onto hot parts and cause a fire. The company says it has 23 reports worldwide of fires while engines are running, but no injuries from this earlier recall.
