After suffering from dementia for several years, Eleanor Rosalynn Carter, the former first lady of the United States, passed away on Sunday, November 19.

According to CNN, her husband, former President Jimmy Carter, attended the funeral.

A tribute was held on Tuesday at the Glenn Memorial United Methodist Church at Emory University in Atlanta, Georgia.

One of her last journeys took place on Monday morning, as her body traveled from Plains to Atlanta. May she rest in peace.

Originally from Plains, Georgia, Rosalynn Carter was born on August 18, 1927. She passed away peacefully at her home at the age of 96.

In May, the Carter Center reported that she was suffering from dementia. The public was able pay their respects to her from 6 to 10 pm on Monday.

The private funeral for family and friends took place on Wednesday, November 29, at the Maranatha Baptist Church in Plains.

Rosalynn Carter was orphaned as a teenager and she helped her mother support the family.

Before turning 19, she married Jimmy Carter, and they had four children: John, James, Donnel, and Amy.

When Jimmy Carter was elected senator for the State of Georgia in 1962, Rosalynn Carter supported her husband in his political career.

She campaigned with hime when he ran for president of the United States and later was involved with the Carter Center.

She was an advocate for mental health reform

According to CNN, Rosalynn Carter distinguished herself as a tireless advocate for mental health reform.

Furthermore, she fought to destigmatize mental illnesses and dedicated herself, alongside her husband, to various humanitarian efforts.

She also actively participated in preparing the foundation to assist in the 2004 Venezuelan presidential referendum.

The funeral was attended by U.S. President Joe Biden, as well as the First Lady Jill Biden, not to mention Vice President Kamala Harris and her husband, Doug Emhoff.

Months before turning fifty, the former first lady underwent surgery to remove a breast tumor.

Fortunately it was benign, although it prompted her to pay more attention to her health.

Following her funeral, her remains will be laid to rest at her home in Plains, Georgia.
