In 1994, a group of men surrounded Eva Analía de Jesús, calling her ‘lesbian’ and ‘tortillera’ (a derogatory term for a lesbian) while she was on her way to the store to buy beer.
Eight years later, this Argentine woman (nicknamed ‘Higui’ after Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita) escaped an attempted rape.
During this attack, she was stabbed three times in the back, landing her in the hospital, never imagining what was to come.
Upon returning home, she discovered that her house had been set on fire, which prompted her to leave her neighborhood. Her life would change several years later.
‘I’m going to make you feel like a woman’
October 16, 2016, is a day Eva Analía de Jesús will never forget. Several men attacked her by attempting what is known as ‘corrective rape.’
Cristian Rubén Espósito was one of her attackers. He was also one of the men who tried to rape her in 2002.
They threw her to the ground and began assaulting her, tearing both her pants and underwear. She thought they were going to rape her.
At one point, Higui defended herself with a gardening knife and stabbed Cristian in the chest. Later, the police found her in very bad shape.
Eva Analía de Jesús ended up in prison
Even though all she did was defend herself, Eva Analía de Jesús ended up in prison for the death of Cristian Rubén Espósito.
Higui was charged with simple homicide and detained for eight months. On June 12, 2017, the order for her release was given.
Various social organizations played a significant role in this release after months of protests.
Finally, in March 2022, she was acquitted of all charges. However, the attack she suffered was never investigated.
Huigi calls for justice
After the first hearing in which she sought acquittal, Eva Analía de Jesús gave a revealing interview.
Here, she first said she didn’t know how she was enduring what she was experiencing ‘inside,’ but that the people supporting her gave her confidence.
«But it’s messed up because (the attackers) are all good today, but if I had been the dead one, nothing of what is happening would have happened.»
After her acquittal, Higui called for justice for all people who were unjustly imprisoned.

Abused woman syndrome
The case of Eva Analía de Jesús, who once received the support of Colombian goalkeeper René Higuita, is not the only one of its kind in the world.
According to the BBC, Frenchwoman Jacqueline Sauvage killed her husband because he had beaten and raped her daughters for several years.
The case had such an impact that French President Francois Hollande granted her pardon, and she is now free despite being found guilty.
For this reason, authorities are considering including the concept of ‘abused woman syndrome’ in the criminal code of this country.
