What is known about Trump’s attacker Thomas Matthew Crooks

The 20-year-old man who authorities say attempted to assassinate former President Donald Trump was Thomas Matthew Crooks of Bethel Park, Pennsylvania.

Crooks was shot dead by Secret Service officers after opening fire from a rooftop outside the Trump rally site in Butler.

The FBI has not yet determined a motive for the killing, and there are no prior court records against Crooks in Pennsylvania, AP reported.

Trump, the likely Republican presidential nominee, said on social media that he suffered a wound to his right ear in the shooting.

Thomas Matthew Crooks’ father did not want to talk

Two spectators were seriously injured in the incident, according to authorities.

Relatives of Thomas Matthew have not responded to messages from The Associated Press.

His father, Matthew Crooks, told CNN he is trying to understand what happened, but will not talk about his son until he speaks to authorities.

Bomb-making materials were found in Crooks’ vehicle near the rally and at his home.

A roadblock was set up Sunday near the home of Thomas Matthew Crooks, located in an enclave of brick houses on the outskirts of Pittsburgh.

Crooks graduated from Bethel Park High School in 2022, where he received a math and science award, according to the school district.

Crooks’ political leanings are unclear. Although he was registered as a Republican voter, he also donated to a progressive political action committee in 2021.

Crooks was not carrying any identification, so DNA and other methods were used to confirm his identity.

Police recovered an AR-style rifle at the scene, according to a person familiar with the investigation.

An analysis of AP shows that the shooter was able to get closer to the stage where Trump was speaking, less than 150 meters away.

A video on social media shows the body of a person dressed in grey camouflage on the roof of a building near the rally site.

Investigators believe the gun was purchased by Thomas Matthew Crooks’ father at least six months ago.
