Recall: Contaminated smoked clams sold at Walmart and other US stores

CONTAMINATED SMOKED CLAMS. Officials recall smoked clams contaminated with PFAS chemicals from Walmart and other stores in 15 US states. They warn that these products are potentially dangerous to the health of consumers.

This week, the Food and Drug Administration (FDA) reported that they detected significant levels of PFAS chemicals in some samples of smoked clams. As a result, Bumble Bee Foods has decided to voluntarily withdraw its products from the shelves.

«Bumble Bee Foods, LLC issued a voluntary recall of a specific smoked clam SKU after FDA testing found detectable levels of PFAS chemicals in samples of the product,» the canned food company said in a press release.

They also detailed that the massive recall is specifically for 3.75 cans of Bumble Bee Smoked Clams identified with the UPC label 8660075234 “which came from a third-party manufacturer in China.” Those who have purchased this product should check the UPC label below the barcode on the back of the package.

Bumble Bee Foods indicated that the canned clams had been distributed throughout the United States. According to Eat This Not That they were sold at Walmart stores in 15 states, including Connecticut, Delaware, Florida, Indiana, Kentucky, Massachusetts, Maryland, North Carolina, New Jersey, New York, Ohio, Pennsylvania, Virginia, Vermont and West Virginia, and even in Puerto Rico.

The good news is that, «To date there have been no reports of illnesses associated with this recalled product that was distributed nationwide to a limited number of retailers,» the company said. The company warned that “perfluoroalkyl and polyfluoroalkyl substances (PFAS) are a diverse group of man-made chemicals that are used in a wide range of industrial and consumer products” but that “do not break down easily” and “accumulate in the environment and in our body”.

What can PFAS contamination cause? It could cause “increased cholesterol levels, increased high blood pressure and pre-eclampsia in pregnant women, developmental effects, decreased immune response, changes in liver function, and an increase in certain types of cancer,” the studies stated.

Bumble Bee Foods made it clear that this recall of canned smoked clams does not include of their other products and highlighted that “the company is working with the third-party manufacturer in China to further investigate and resolve this matter” that could affect consumers.

For now, the most important thing is that those customers who have purchased the product must dispose of it immediately .
